Finding Inspiration from From My Carolina Home

Last week the Mancuso Quiltfest Show was held in Greenville, SC, and a few gal pals from our guild went with me to see it. I haven’t been to this show before, mostly because the ticket price is a bit steep – $15 plus parking fee. I have had precious little sewing time lately, and that isn’t going to change for the next couple of weeks, so I thought it would be nice to see some inspiring work by other quilters. The show was both inspiring and disappointing at the same time. A few pieces really caught my attention ...

Sunday Chat from From My Carolina Home

It has been such an interesting week for projects, with a lot of things in the works. I’ve been working on a Quilt of Valor on the frame, my Japanese art quilt in my chair doing handwork, and crafting in between. We’ve had wildlife visits, too. I’ve been cooking up a storm testing recipes for the upcoming Mountain State Fair, so My Sweet Babboo has been eating pretty well. The highlight of the week was a visit by a pretty female hummingbird, perhaps the mate of the male I was able to photograph recently. It was a ...

Soley Cove Flowerpot from Sew Karen-ly Created...

This "flowerpot" is located at Soley Town, a beautiful spot just at the base of Economy Mountain, N.S.  I took this picture a year or so ago and decided it would make a good project to stitch.

Using the photograph as a guide, I traced around the main pieces in the photo and cut those from fabric.  The rest of the details (like the trees) were added using different weights of Aurifil thread.
Mostly I stitched with 50 weight thread, but some 40 and 28 weight found their way in there as well.

It honestly hasn't turned out ...

It will be a day of free motion stitching to create free-hand machine embroidered appliqués which can be used in your projects. (All you need is a regular sewing machine, NOT an embroidery machine.)

More information available here: https://sewkaren-lycreated.blogspot.com/2022/05/back-to-spool-workshop.html  To register, please email.

Sunset Parament from Sew Karen-ly Created...

Yesterday, the latest commissioned church parament was dedicated at First Baptist Church in Amherst, N.S.  This piece was finished several months ago, and I have shown snippets here and there during construction; now I can share the entire piece.

Commissioned by the Lusby family in memory of their parents, this piece is for display during funeral services.  From discussions with both church and family, it was decided that a sunset would be an appropriate background.  My feeling was that the piece needed to be very, very simple, and calming, so I was conscious not to busy-it-up.  To this end ...

The Quilting Line on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

I am traveling this week so it gives me a good chance to procrastinate on finishing Tessa's face.  I'm so close to getting that piece done that it has me thinking about the quilting.  I tend to do three kinds of quilting on an art piece...lines that are essential for the composition....lines that are essential for the texture...lines that hold together the three layers.

Lines that are Essential for the Composition

After much trial and error, I usually will add these lines with just the top and batting layered (no backing).  This way I can ...

Barbed wire and Beauty from Sew Sunshine

17" x 17.5"
paint on fabric
hand and machine quilted

This small art piece I created in the textile artist group on fb. The idea was to try all sorts of mark making tools, cut it up and stitch it back together. Since quilting is my thing I cut apart and stitched back together with hand work and machine work.
"Barbed wire and the beauty beneath" is an ode to the pasture land my husband and I have been trying to clean up. Beneath all the grass and dead trees were huge rolls of barbed wire and fencing wire ...

Cassowary is Finished from The Quilt Yarn

Wow...I worked for most of last week on this to get him done and today I finished him.

I am just a little bit proud of this...nothing about this project came easy to me. Each section had its own challenging little things and some of them I did get right and some of them I did not.

In general, I think I thread painted a bit heavily in parts and some of the shading is a bit wonky, but I am more than happy with it. Actually cannot believe I managed to do this.

And here he is ...

Progress on WIPs from The Quilt Yarn

Had my second day of the Elizabeth Hartman workshop. Had not done any more work on the blocks other than cutting my pieces out for the owl block.

Well, the owl did take the whole session from 9.30am to 2.30pm. It had so many tiny pieces and was a bit challenging for my brain in terms of getting them oriented the right way around. Worked very slowly as I did not want to mess it up. I only need one owl for the wall hanging and I definitely did not want to do another one.

Here it is ...

Salt and Sand Blog Hop from Stitchin at Home

Starfish or more accurately Seastars were my inspiration for my project in the Salt and Sand Blog hop, organized by Carla at Creatin’ in the Sticks
My starfish is hanging around in the rocks, usually, it's in my bathroom.

Did you know that all starfish resemble stars, the most common only have five arms, although some of them can grow up to 40 arms?  Interested in reading more fun facts about Starfish check this out.

Thread selection, not all of these made the cut

I drew out the shape of the starfish and traced it onto my fabric with ...

Framed - Island Batik Ambassador October Challenge from Creatin' in the Sticks

The August Challenge for the Island Batik Ambassadors is

Thread Painting with Aurifl
and
today I am excited to share
Framed.

As Island Batik Ambassadors,
we received Aurifil 50 weight cotton thread in our second ambassador box
to use in this month's challenge.

My decision on what to use was made easy because the threads I received matched
the fabrics from the Island Batik Spring 2020 collection,
William's Garden, designed by Kathy Engle.

These fabrics should be in your favorite local quilt shop now
and the 50 weight Aurifil threads are (left to right)
#2021, #2545, #2692, #1148 ...
